One metre. That's how much space drivers must leave when passing a cyclist … more, whenever possible.

As of January 1, 2026, Manitoba law requires drivers to leave at least one metre of space when passing a person riding a bicycle.

On Friday, members of #WPSTraffic were in high bike-use areas conducting an education and awareness initiative focused on the new legislation.

Drivers who did not provide the required passing distance were stopped and educated about the law and the risks cyclists face when vehicles pass too closely. No tickets were issued during the initiative. The goal was simple: increase awareness and encourage safer driving habits before a tragedy occurs.

The consequences of a mistake can be significant. In 2025, two cyclists lost their lives in collisions in Winnipeg.

In 2026, we have already investigated two serious vehicle-bicycle collisions, including one fatal collision.
Whether you're behind the wheel, on a bike, or on foot, we all have a role to play in keeping our streets safe.
A little more space can make a big difference.
