@JiaqiLiu_soc This happened to me too. I was working on a pretty unique project and based on the reviewer comments the manuscript was constantly sent to the same reviewer. After 2 years of review, a senior scholar published the same study with the same data which took me years to obtain.
I’m happy to announce that in August 2024 I’ll be joining the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures at Penn State as Assistant Professor of German(ic) and Linguistics! https://t.co/rIvkH5DCTq
@Black_Kettle In a study of “Intensifiers in German” in JGL, I briefly suggest “sehr” is related to English “sorry” too. When you say you’re sorry, it’s like German “es tut mir Leid” (‘it does me pain’) but the meaning of pain in English has been bleached semantically
@BerLinguistin Exciting study! I have two studies on the use of gender-inclusive language in everyday vernacular German (both pretty much showing that the generic masculine is still the most pervasive form when referring to mixed-sex groups). I’d be happy to share them
@sleepingdingo@fount8 There were many words for ’woman’ in Old English. Wīf was the most common which ultimately undergoes semantic narrowing, becoming modern ‘wife’. The word ‘woman’ comes from wīfmann (female-person), the “f” is thought to have either assimilated to m or have been deleted 😊
Where did "wer" go? In Old English the most frequent word used to refer to a male adult was "wer", but today it survives only in retention compounds (e.g., werewolf 'man-wolf'). This study looks at "wer" it went. https://t.co/1Rx3fbD2Gt
Stratton, James. (2023). Where did wer go? Lexical variation and change in third-person male adult noun referents in Old and Middle English. Language Variation and Change, 35(2), 199-221.
@dietweeterei Maybe there isn’t a specific compound noun to describe it? As a figure, maybe you’d describe it along the lines of ‘major diachronic sound changes throughout the history of X language(s)’?
@LucasSeuren I have a paper for which the reviews were completed in January. The editor hasn’t returned them to me. I emailed to ask if there’s an issue. They told me everything’s fine and I’ll get them when they’re free. It’s been 5 months of them sitting on the reviews
