Today, my good friend and colleague, Speaker @DadePhelan, announced his retirement from the Texas House.
Dade and I walked into the chamber together as classmates in 2015, wide-eyed and ready to serve. In 2019, we each took on the challenge (and burden) as first-term chairmen — Dade at State Affairs, and me at Ways and Means. We learned together and grew as leaders that Session.
When Dade was elected Speaker, I was proud to serve as one of his most loyal supporters — once again learning with him and from him. He placed his trust in me to chair the Robb Elementary Investigative Committee, and later to serve on the Panhandle Wildfire Committee. Those assignments were some of the deepest honors of my legislative career, and I’ll always be grateful for his confidence in me; and, his wisdom in having the House lead through these investigations.
Dade is more than a colleague — He is a treasure to Southeast Texas, to the Texas House, and to the great Lone Star State. His legacy of leadership, service, and friendship will live on long after he leaves the chamber.
When Dade Phelan retires, even the Texas Capitol dome tips its hat.
Thank you Speaker Phelan for your service to our State.
