Geologist Clarence Dutton (in 1882) named many of the canyon’s formations "temples", after Eastern religious or spiritual deities like Shiva or Vishnu. Cliffs, slopes, alcoves, plateaus, mesas, buttes, terraces, and platforms all make up what are called temples in Grand Canyon.
