Diesel prices have hit a record high in the UK at 199.18p per litre.

Filling an average family car now costs almost £110 - £31 more than it did when the Middle East conflict began in February.

That is a weekly hit to working households, tradespeople, haulage companies, taxi drivers, farmers and anyone whose living depends on a van or lorry.

The pain does not stop at the pump. Almost everything on supermarket shelves arrives on a diesel truck. Delivery vans, construction plants, agricultural machinery and the supply chains that keep the country moving all run on the same fuel. When the price of that fuel jumps nearly 40% in seven months, it lands on the price of food, building materials, parcels, and services. Small businesses absorb it until they cannot and eventually shut the doors. Rural drivers already covering longer distances feel it first and hardest.

This is the second time in four years that a distant war has sent UK diesel into uncharted territory. The previous record was set after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Now another conflict thousands of miles away is doing it again.

The UK remains massively exposed because of government neglect and punishment taxation, limited domestic refining facilities, high dependence on imported products and a fuel duty and VAT structure that takes an even larger slice even as prices surge.

Households are already stretched. Energy bills have not eased. Now the cost of simply getting to work or delivering a product has jumped again. Many forecourts are already over £2 a litre; motorway services are higher still.

It’s time for the government to act and slash fuel duty at the petrol and diesel pump.
