Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC) at the Scaling Care Innovations in Africa (SCIA) Midterm Conference at
Holiday Inn Sunnyside Park, Johannesburg | October 6–9, 2025
@FCDCKenya participated in the Scaling Care Innovations in Africa (SCIA) Midterm Conference— a four-day forum for learning and collaboration in Johannesburg, South Africa, led by our consortium lead @AKU_IHD and partners including @Mwarpkenya MECP Kenya, and @IsioloNetwork.
The gathering featured 19 transformative projects from across Africa, each redefining care work as a catalyst for gender equality, social inclusion, and economic empowerment. Attendees included representatives from CanadaInSA, @Hewlett_Found , and @IDRC_CRDI
The conference provided a rich platform for peer learning and evidence sharing — assessing achievements, challenges, and lessons learned while strengthening collaboration within the emerging African Community of Practice on Care.
During the sessions, Linnet Kaloki from the @AKU_IHD presented our work under the Care for All: Catalyzing Care Innovations initiative in Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs), implemented in partnership with @AKU_IHD, MECP Kenya, @MWARP_Kenya, and @IsioloNetwork.
We highlighted three interlinked pillars:
✓Policy influence informed by evidence and baseline research
✓ Household empowerment through shared care and equitable time use
✓Community transformation anchored in inclusive childcare systems
Our message was clear:
> “Quality childcare frees women’s time, empowers them economically, and keeps girls in school.”
This aligns with @FCDC_Kenya’s mission to advance gender equity, social inclusion, and sustainable livelihoods in Kenya’s frontier counties, reinforcing our advocacy for integrating education, child protection, and early childhood development (ECD) into care systems.
We extend our gratitude to @IDRC_CRDI for funding this initiative and to our consortium partners — @AKU_IHD,@Mwarpkenya , MECP Kenya, and @IsioloNetwork — for their collaboration and commitment to reshaping Africa’s care economy.
Together, we reaffirm our commitment to building a care-centered, gender-just, and inclusive Africa— where the often invisible work of care is acknowledged, valued, and transformed into pathways of empowerment for women and girls.

Sailing Towards Peace: Strengthening EWER Systems in Lamu East ⛵🕊️
On 11th & 12th September 2025, @Mwarpkenya , in partnership with the @InteriorKE and with support from @DerisWanaag , under the #AmaniMpakaniProject, convened a two-day Early Warning & Early Response (EWER) Forum at Kiunga Primary School, Lamu East.
The forum brought together MoINA officers, security actors (@NPSOfficial_KE , #GSU, @kdfinfo and #KenyaNavy) alongside #peace committees from #Kiunga, #Ishakani, #Basuba, #Mmangai, #Kiwayu and #Ndau. Together, we mapped out existing systems like Nyumba Kumi, chiefs’ structures, peace committees and cross-border networks — identifying #strengths, #gaps and #opportunities to make responses more effective.
✨ Highlights included:
✔️ Technical sessions on EWER concepts, roles & confidentiality
✔️ Case study reflections & shared learning
✔️ A coordination plan with clear stakeholder roles
✔️ Stronger info-sharing & ethical reporting mechanisms
By embracing #participatory, conflict-sensitive, and #inclusive approaches, the forum reinforced government–community #collaboration and commitment to #peaceful, #resilient, and #responsive communities in Lamu East and across borders. 🌍
