The UK has hundreds of thousands of defibrillators – but if they can’t be found in an emergency, they can’t help save a life.
We’re asking all defib owners and guardians to register them with The Circuit database to help increase chances of survival after a cardiac arrest.
Visit https://t.co/m1KUYAhRDg to learn more and register your defib.
Each year in the UK, 1000s die from cardiac arrests who could survive if they had early CPR and defibrillation. But defibrillation availability is very limited.
So if you can afford it, why do I think you should buy one? For the same reason you’d buy a fire extinguisher or a carbon monoxide detector or life insurance - some purchases we make are for a piece of mind and are based on a risk/benefit analysis.
In the case of a carbon monoxide detector, for instance, there is a cost - around £25 – but a benefit, based on how helpful the purchase is (virtually 100 per cent in preventing death) and how common the risk is (30 deaths per year in the UK).
With a defibrillator the cost is higher, and the equipment can increase survival by 70 per cent. But deaths from cardiac arrests are 1000 times more common than from carbon monoxide.
When you work it out, on a risk/benefit analysis, defibrillators are three times more cost effective than carbon monoxide detectors.
In this week’s Mail health section I explain why this year I will be getting a defibrillator for my home and why I think the government should get rid of VAT for business, charities and households people buying these machines to make them more affordable.
We’re looking back on the incredible strides we’ve made since launching our My Right to Cardiac Arrest Recovery campaign for day nine of #12DaysOfResus! The campaign aims to improve the post-cardiac arrest support offered by the NHS.
Check out some highlights of the progress made so far: 🧵 (1/6)
