Britain has enough operational nuclear warheads to level Russia’s major population centres. Wreck the metropolitan areas of Moscow and St Petersburg and there’s not much left of Russia. So these silly arguments should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve.

The reason why a war with Russia is so dangerous is the presence of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. Russia has an estimated total inventory of over 5,400 nuclear warheads. France has 290 and Britain has 225. Given the vast size of Russia, the French nuclear arsenal could make 0.1% of the Russian territory uninhabitable. The Russian nuclear arsenal could completely destroy all of Western Europe, and still have a lot of missiles left. This is not a war Europe can win.

Britain’s role is the most negative one, as it has been for centuries — long centuries.

Certainly in relation to Russia, but also in relation to most of Britain’s other — I wouldn’t call them partners, rather fellow travelers — because Britain has never had permanent allies.

And the United States is no exception.

The British have always looked somewhat down on those Anglo-Saxons who went across the Atlantic and created a state of their own.

Yes, there has been a lot of (possibly deliberate) misunderstanding on this issue: it’s going to be a hybrid fleet, not an autonomous fleet. Crewed warships and submarines are still gliding down the slipways (so to speak) in Barrow and Glasgow...
