Even if you don’t like the state of US politics, it’s never justifiable to idolise or normalise Mao’s atrocities.

Many people pointed out what Mao did to the PRC that caused millions of deaths, making him the person who’s responsible for most deaths in history. The disgust is more than that.

If you think by defending him you’re defending the ideology that you believe (communism/socialism), then you’re making a HUGE mistake.

First and foremost, Mao did everything mostly for himself, instead of serving the -ism. Many books documenting the atrocities in Cultural Revolution (my favourite one “Captive Spirits: Prisoners of the Cultural Revolution”牛鬼蛇神錄 that I read in jail) revealed stories that ordinary people were persecuted regardless of their political ideologies — one can be a proletarian revolutionary but labelled as “counter-revolutionary” and thrown in jail just because they talked to Mao’s political enemies INSIDE the party, with roughly same ideologies. The Great Leap Forward was disastrous and man-made, not just a famine in a natural-disaster way.

It’s not difficult to tell Mao is a power-grabbing demagogue. So many got killed (even if they were ideologically aligned with the regime) because of their family background, born at the wrong time, or simply seen as not loyal enough to Mao. The revultionary/counter-revolutionary distinction and narratives were mostly just a tool to persecute.

Idolising or normalising what Mao did was not defending socialism/communism — it’s fantasising a worshipping cult that permits the leader to power-grab through mass murder under the facade of a certain ideological dreamland.

@kimchipump @WSJ @WSJopinion Less than 1%, as if that matters. 2/3rds of Fortune 500 companies are incorporated in Delaware, a state with less than 1% of the US population. If your argument is companies shouldn’t incorporate where contract law is predictable and capital markets are strongest, that’s bizarre.

@tuuu28283 I think your people made a huge mistake with your flag law. Even in the United States, where we love our flag, there’s no law against flag desecration because of the Constitution. If someone desecrates our flag, I don’t like it. But at least I know who my enemy is.

@tuuu28283 Yeah, I bought a 4TB SSD two years ago because I needed the space, not because I saw AI coming. Back then, a good 4TB drive was around $250–300. Today, comparable drives are often $600–1,100. AI has completely changed the storage market.

@ApexSeeker_ All water has a taste. I hate when people buy bottled water where perfectly safe tap water is available. In countries like the US, Japan, and South Korea, tap water is treated to be safe to drink, and I drink it all the time.

@ApexSeeker_ Warren Buffett is the perfect example. He still lives in the same house he bought in 1958, pays himself a relatively modest salary, drives practical cars, and lets his investments speak for themselves. Real wealth often doesn’t need to advertise itself.
