"Dormant Cargo"
I found the trunk before I found the pose. It carried other people's things for a century, and the wood still shows it: iron straps, split seams, edges worn smooth by hands I never knew. I asked the model to lie on it as cargo. Knees drawn in, face hidden in her arms, spine turned up toward the light. She keeps everything closed, and that is what I came to photograph. The room gave me the light I needed: two windows, cool and even, no drama in them. Pale walls, green shadow in the corner, skin read as volume. The back becomes terrain, with ridges, hollows, and a horizon at the hip. Under it the trunk stays dark and heavy, a plinth for softer material. What interests me is weight. A body has its own, but a person carries something else when no one is watching. The title is literal. Dormant, because the load is paused and not set down. Cargo, because whatever we carry ends up resting on something older than we are.
