Doncaster, going is good with good to soft in places, seven races, and it's the 250th running of the Leger.
NAP: Enceladus, 15:35. He's won his last three, a Royal Ascot handicap and then the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood, and he's still going the right way while most of this field have been bouncing off each other all summer. Christmas Day is the obvious one on Derby form but that win came on rain-softened ground and he's been turned over twice since. On a sound surface I want the improver, and the trip is no worry with him.
13:10, Game Character. Fifth in the big York maiden three weeks back is easily the strongest bit of form on offer here and this looks a softer heat. Al Jabbar heads the market but he didn't fire at Newmarket first time, so I'm happy to take him on.
13:45, Desert Castle. Short enough, but he won his Newmarket maiden with plenty in hand and looked well above average doing it. Only six of them and nothing here has done anything close. If you want a price instead, Gentle Hurricane was beaten two lengths in the Acomb and is still learning.
14:20, Twilight Calls in the Portland. Three wins from his last four with the visor on, the latest at Goodwood, and he was the only one in his group to make the top eight last time. Saver each-way on Eternal Sunshine, who won this last year, scored at Hamilton three weeks ago and has the high draw. Trefor is out.
14:55, More Thunder. Best horse in the race by a fair way on his spring form, second in the Lockinge and beaten a whisker in the Queen Anne. He's been below that lately but dropping back to this grade should sort him out.
16:15, Inspired. Won a nineteen-runner York handicap six days ago, three from his last four, and he escapes a penalty for it. Class rise to deal with, but he's thriving and carries next to nothing.
16:48, Thunder Run. Winless this season but hammering away in top handicaps, only beaten by an improver in a twenty-runner York race three weeks ago, and he goes on soft. Top weight and up three pounds, so it's not a gift, but he's due. Old Harrovian is a non-runner.
Good luck if you're on.
