Instead, he spent part of it with children fighting cancer.

The Hurricanes defenceman brought hockey’s greatest trophy to young patients at Southlake Health’s pediatric oncology clinic, giving them the chance to hold the Stanley Cup, take photos and create memories far bigger than hockey.

For a few hours, treatments, hospital rooms and difficult days took a back seat.

The smiles said everything.

Every Stanley Cup champion gets one day with the Cup.

What they choose to do with it says a lot about who they are.
