What started as a #TidyTuesday from last year became a bit of a visualisation experiment. I've finally found the time to put together some other #Nintendo controllers/consoles (with release year)- all of which were created solely in R using {ggplot2} and extensions 🎮 #Rstats
This week's #TidyTuesday looks at Mario Kart 64 record lap times 🏎🏁 - the first video game I ever owned.
Me: This is a great dataset for an informative time series plot.
Also me: I want to try to plot a Nintendo 64 controller 🎮.

First #TidyTuesday in nearly three years. Good to dust off the ggplot2 cobwebs with a visualisation that isn't analytically useful, but was fun to get my teeth stuck into 🏰 🐉 🎲.

@tamara_cheng Hi Tamara, yep of course. I don’t have access to the code I used (it’s on an old laptop) until the new year, but will send it across then! I’m 99% sure though the code would’ve been mostly following this great thread from Tyler Morgan-Wall https://t.co/1rC4yphHC2
Using #rayshader to overlay a historical map with modern elevation data in 3D.
Everything done in #rstats with the exception of georeferencing the historical map, which was done with QGIS (tutorial referenced in gist).

I have finally got around to playing with #rayshader in #Rstats. I tried adding elevation data to this historic map of Barnsley and Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District 🗺
To get a post doc you have to have a PhD.
That’s usually around 8 years of post-18 study.
It is, by definition, a skilled job.
And now post-docs will not be paid enough to allow foreign PhDs to come the UK?
A new #non-native Didemnum for #Brazilian coasts. The species hasn't been registered elsewhere yet but shows a high invasive potential. Open access 👇 https://t.co/j5htFQhWp3 #INVASIVESNET#BIR#BioInvasionsRecords
#MapMonday On this day in 2021, the #30DayMapChallenge theme was #movement. @DiasporaDan chose to map drive times to @LEGO_Group stores in the UK in this fab and funky map. This year, the theme for the day is 'Outdoors' - what have you created?
#Ecrehous found in shallows by slip; Marbled electric ray - Torpedo marmorata (under reported, 7 Jersey records) , with three leeches which are probably Branchellion torpedinis, recorded in Brittany, but not Britain as far as I am aware @PorcupineMNHS@Soc_Jersiaise@thembauk
After seeing loads of you use {camcorder} to showcase some amazing #TidyTuesday works, I thought I’d give it a whirl finally. Looks a really powerful tool to help show how to create fun visuals through the power of {ggforce} #Rstats
And a few more home shirts complete. Stumbled upon the neat {ggpattern} by @coolbutuseless which has been extremely helpful with gradient shading #RStats#ggplot#dataviz
It's been a while since I've been able to be creative in {ggplot2}. In anticipation of the new Premier League Season starting this week, here are a couple of newly released home shirts recreated solely in #ggplot2 to whet one's appetite #Rstats
Hands up if you've spent time creating a football badge in #ggplot2 to then realise the new kit features a much simplified version of the badge 🙌🙌🙃 #Rstats
Hemlock is only poisonous when ingested, something a child is v unlikely to do as it tastes awful. Hemlock is a beaut plant & food source for insects. Imagine if instead of killing nature this was used as an opportunity to *teach* kids about wild plants.

I've now been away from marine biology for one whole year. I've been thinking about my personal transition from academia to industry, and jotted some cathartic thoughts sharing my own experiences to anyone else considering changing career from academia.
