Freedom in the World is @freedomhouse's flagship annual report on the state of global freedom, in its 53rd year. Today, we released the 2026 version, full text available here: https://t.co/CsSOHvpAsG
Thank you Freedom House, for your steadfast commitment to defending freedom and democracy around the world. It was an honor to meet with your outstanding team and to remember together the brave men and women of Tiananmen on June 4.
I had the honor of meeting with Hamidreza Mohammadi in Oslo, the brother of Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, whose courage and commitment to freedom continue to inspire people around the world.
I had the opportunity to express my admiration for the courage, kindness, and unwavering commitment to freedom and human dignity demonstrated by Narges, by Hamidreza, and by their entire family.
We discussed the plight of political prisoners in Iran, Venezuela, and around the world. Those who risk everything for liberty and justice inspire us all, and their cause must remain at the center of the international community’s efforts.
My solidarity is with Narges Mohammadi, her family, and every political prisoner who continues to suffer for defending fundamental rights. We will continue to raise our voices until they are free and until human rights are respected everywhere.
Narges’ struggle for human rights and freedom is an inspiration to all who believe in democracy and human dignity. Her decades-long fight for women's rights and human rights has made her a global symbol of freedom.
Freedom knows no borders, and neither does our commitment to those who fight for it.

"In an age of disinformation, VOA and USAGM networks told the truth to the world," says Jamie Fly, CEO of Freedom House and former RFE/RL president. Turn them into propaganda outlets, and we lose audiences—and the power of that message. #JournalismNotPropaganda#SaveVOA
The Iranian people have borne decades of repression at the hands of the Islamic Republic. Recent events have only accelerated the regime’s brutality—from executions and mass arrests to the crackdown on peaceful dissent.
The world must not look away. It must center and stand with the Iranian people. https://t.co/MlJKTGAdoN
We remain deeply concerned that local officials in Beihai have cut off my father-in-law's access to his lawyer, severing all lines of information in and out of prison, contrary to the optimism that the leaders of our two countries reached on the case. But we remain hopeful that the tireless work of this administration will be able to secure his release.
All this has incidentally unfolded alongside our welcoming our new little bundle of joy, also named Ezra after his grandpa, into the world just yesterday. We pray they will meet very soon.
Thank you, @FrannieBlock, for the wonderful and timely reporting. #FreePastorJin
Join Freedom House and the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies for a discussion on “Defending Democracy, Countering Authoritarianism, and the Future of U.S. Global Leadership” this Monday, June 8 in Chicago.
Freedom House CEO @Jamiemfly and Hamilton Lugar School Interim Dean David Bosco (@multilateralist ) will examine the state of global freedom, the rise of authoritarian influence, and how governments, institutions, and civil society can respond to democratic backsliding.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2026 Oslo Freedom Forum.
This year’s theme, Dismantling Dictatorship, reflected a simple truth: authoritarian regimes are built on fear, myth, and captured institutions, but they can be dismantled through courage, truth, and deliberate action. We hope the stories, ideas, and conversations shared at this year’s Forum inspire you to challenge repression where you encounter it, support those fighting for freedom, and take meaningful action in your own community.
We look forward to continuing the conversation at the 2027 Oslo Freedom Forum. Join us: https://t.co/GXOa91nB9J
Freedom House was honored to meet with @ZhouFengSuo of @hchina89 and @hrichina, a leader of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. On the anniversary of June 4, we remember the peaceful demonstrators who stood for freedom and democracy and those who lost their lives when the Chinese Communist Party unleashed violence against its own people. We will not forget.
On June 4, we are feeling tremendously blessed and overjoyed to welcome this new addition to our family -- Ezra John Drexel. We hope he will grow up to be a man of faith and honor just like his name's sake. May our family soon be reunited.
Thinking of my friend Alexei Navalny and his family today. He would have turned 50 today.
Goodbye to my fearless friend, Alexei Navalny https://t.co/HYsacXcJRT
After 4 remarkable years in DC, we bid farewell to our Deputy Head of Mission, Jan Havránek 🇨🇿🇺🇸
Friends and partners gathered for an evening of memories and gratitude to celebrate years of transatlantic cooperation and friendship—complete with a live performance from Jan’s upcoming EP, "Between Worlds." 🎶
Thank you, Jan, for your dedication to strengthening Czech-American ties.
Wishing you and your family all the best on your next adventure!
She refused to stay quiet, even when silence would have been safer.
At the Oslo Freedom Forum, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate @MariaCorinaYA shares how decades of political repression in Venezuela shaped her fight for democracy, and why continuing that struggle is essential to dismantling dictatorship.
An impressive conversation with Richard Gere at @OsloFF. He spoke out in support of dissent around the world - especially in Tibet - and warned how easy it is to overlook democracy erosion when we’re not vigilant. Deeply conscious & policy-minded, yet full of humility and humor.
Freedom House was honored to assist Tsi Conrad in speaking directly with @OsloFF attendees from his prison cell in Cameroon’s Kondengui Central Prison, where he remains unjustly detained for his reporting on the Anglophone crisis. Through our #FreeThemAll campaign, we will continue calling for his immediate and unconditional release.

One year ago, I was in a punishment cell.
Today, I spoke at the Oslo Freedom Forum.
Freedom is lost long before people realize it.
My release was a political decision. The release of hundreds of political prisoners in Belarus can be a political decision too.
This is not a question of possibility. It is a question of political will.

While news from the Uyghur region is not always in the headlines, this @FT piece shows that the human rights crisis is far from over. The analysis shows that the Uyghur region has the highest detention capacity in the world— despite the Chinese government’s claims of a return to normality.
One reason there is little news from the region is that the CCP controls the population through surveillance, policing, and collective punishment of family members or whole communities.
A recently released report by @UyghurProject shows that the Chinese government has made it nearly impossible for Uyghurs in the diaspora to contact their loved ones without putting them at risk of imprisonment.
As the report notes, “Delayed, fragmented, or heavily mediated news is not merely an administrative inconvenience; it is a deliberate tool that isolates families, amplifies psychological distress, and reinforces the broader strategy of transnational repression.”

@NEDemocracy will continue to stand with the Uyghur people against this unprecedented repression.
