Real talk on this State Police matter.

Nobody is saying we don't need more security personnel. We need Federal Police, State Police, Army, Civil Defence, Amotekun, Vigilantes — everybody. The insecurity is getting ridiculous, so more boots on the ground sounds good on paper.

But let's talk about the elephant in the room: money.

Federal Police collect federal salaries and allocations, yet plenty of them still turn checkpoints into personal ATM machines. Now imagine creating State Police in states that are struggling to pay workers' salaries and minimum wage. How exactly is that supposed to end well?

Forget political abuse for a minute. We already know governors will try to use them against opponents. That's almost guaranteed. But even before that, let's discuss the basics.

What happens when salaries are delayed for 3, 4, or 6 months?

What happens when a policeman in Kwara, Kogi, Ebonyi or Zamfara discovers that his colleague of the same rank in Lagos is earning twice his salary?

Do we honestly think armed men with families to feed will simply smile and endure?

Let's stop pretending hunger and frustration don't change human behaviour. An angry, underpaid civil servant is already a problem. An angry, underpaid man carrying an AK-47 is an even bigger problem.

Some states are already owing teachers, pensioners and civil servants. If they can't consistently pay unarmed workers, what confidence do we have that they'll consistently pay armed officers?

And when salary delays happen, who suffers? The ordinary citizen.

This isn't an argument against State Police. It's an argument against creating State Police without first solving the funding problem.

If we're serious about it, there should be minimum funding requirements, an independent salary structure, guaranteed welfare standards, and strict federal oversight before any state qualifies.

Otherwise, we may end up creating a force that becomes a worse version of the problem we're trying to solve.

Security is important. But giving guns to people whose salaries are uncertain is not a security strategy. That's a gamble.
