When I was a child I used to rush out to greet my father when he came home from work.
He worked construction.
He would always have a 32oz Diet Pepsi he got at the gas station before work sitting in the cup-holder of his truck that had spent all day melting in the heat.
He would reek of cigarettes (despite the fact that he didn’t smoke but everyone else did.) I would hop into his truck and drink the leftovers in his cup.
It was 95% melted ice and 5% Diet Pepsi.
I can still taste it and hear my brother dribbling the basketball so he would be good enough to make the 8th grade team.
My mom was inside heating up a tray of Stouffer’s something-or-other having just gotten off a 10 hour shift.
My sisters were playing with their Barbies in their bedroom.
Cicadas were screaming at full volume.
We didn’t have much of anything, but they made it work with the 6 of us.

It’s been a few decades, and my parents are still madly in love with each other.
All of my siblings are happily married with children.

Love is the most important commodity.
Do not let anyone you love go a day without knowing that fully.
