This week, we welcomed Bletchley the guide dog and his owner, Rayana, to Bletchley Park.
Sponsored and named by @GCHQ, Bletchley was trained by volunteer puppy trainer Gareth (pictured in blue).
Gareth said: "We thoroughly enjoyed the day and it was fascinating to look around Bletchley Park. The tour was a particular highlight."
How could we resist welcoming a dog called Bletchley to Bletchley Park?
@guidedogs
“The solution? Conveyor belts through the Blocks.”
With messages constantly flooding in from the teleprinter rooms, Bletchley Park needed a fast, efficient way to get vital intelligence to the codebreakers.

On VE Day, we commemorate the end of the war in Europe and the incredible work carried out in secret at Bletchley Park.
If you could ask a Bletchley Park codebreaker one question about their wartime experience, what would it be?
Pictured: A photograph of a group of WAAF (Women's Auxiliary Air Force) personnel from Bletchley Park who travelled to Trafalgar Square on VE Day to celebrate. On VE Day, many Veterans and civilians travelled to London to celebrate the end of the war in Europe, in addition to the celebrations nationwide.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Ruth Bourne.
Ruth served in the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) during World War Two and worked as a Bombe operator and checker at Eastcote and Stanmore, both outstations of Bletchley Park, from 1943 to 1945.
Iain Standen, CEO of Bletchley Park Trust, said:
“The Trust was very sad to learn of Ruth’s death. Once the veil of secrecy had been lifted, she was passionate about sharing the story of the work that she and her colleagues had undertaken. For many years, she generously gave her time as a tour guide, helping visitors understand the human stories behind the codebreaking work. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her, and remembered with immense gratitude and affection.”
Ruth’s contribution to the war effort, and to preserving Bletchley Park’s legacy, will never be forgotten.

Bletchley Park is famous for its large analytic machines – but these would have been useless without a huge amount of work done with humble pen and paper.
At Bletchley Park, a pencil and squared paper were the essential tools of the codebreaker. They were used to note indicators, rotor orders and letter chains on working sheets, carry out calculations and log results. Most codebreaking, in fact, was done by hand.
The famous codebreaking machines like the Bombe and Colossus did only part of the work: a large number of tasks had to be done manually before and after the machines were used, if ciphers were to actually be broken.
In intelligence analysis, too, pen and paper were the most important tools of the trade, for notetaking and writing translations and reports. Every neatly-formatted item of Ultra intelligence which landed on the desk of an Allied general began life as a rough draft scribbled by hand on a pro-forma chit.
In short, even at one of the most advanced intelligence centres of WWII, much of the day-to-day codebreaking still relied on pencil, paper, and human brainpower.

By the late 1980s, Bletchley Park’s wartime role was still largely unknown, and the closed site faced demolition to make way for housing and a supermarket. In 1991, the Bletchley Archaeological and Historical Society formed a committee to save the Park.
In 1992, the committee persuaded Milton Keynes Council to declare most of Bletchley Park a conservation area. The Bletchley Park Trust was formed, opening the site to the public in 1994 with HRH The Duke of Kent as Patron. Today, Bletchley Park is a thriving, self-funding heritage attraction and museum dedicated to telling the story of the Codebreakers.
