Happy Friday #Nashville! The uptick we saw in #coronavirus cases last week is continuing, with average %positives now >8%. Overall cases are still low, but let's work together to prevent further increases. Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend☀️🌸 🌿
Good Morning #Nashville. While #coronavirus remains low, we see a slight uptick in cases, with our moving average %positives now at 5%. Something to keep an eye on 🧐 Stay safe and enjoy the weekend 🌸
@annetkiraboc1 @VI4Research @FrontGenetics Yes! And if we can somehow do research that combines the microbiome and COVID, we will top the citation charts next time for sure 😆
We found that inter-correlations between bacterial taxa increased in obesity, suggesting altered community dynamics. Surprisingly, salivary microbiota provided a more distinct pattern of differentiation between obese & lean individuals than fecal microbiota.
New paper from @Andrei_Bombin's postdoc in the Ferguson Lab 🦠🧬 @JDMosley_Moses@PhysRep@VuBiome
Obesity influences composition of salivary and fecal microbiota and impacts the interactions between bacterial taxa https://t.co/P4Tjq3mAGj
We are interested in the #metabolite 2-AAA, which associates with #T2D and #atherosclerosis. We found that knocking out a key gene in the 2-AAA pathway leads to #mitochondrial dysfunction; perhaps helping to explain the link between 2-AAA and disease.
New Paper Out: Knock-Out of DHTKD1 Alters Mitochondrial Respiration and Function, and May Represent a Novel Pathway in Cardiometabolic Disease Risk https://t.co/j4bonJmETm
Final call: Today is the last day to submit a #MicrobiomeVentureFund application to kickstart new microbiome scholarship. We look forward to your best ideas and new discoveries!
APPLY for @VuBiome Venture Fund to kick-start new microbiome research and education activities @VanderbiltU. Diversity across career stages and schools is encouraged. Deadline for a one page proposal is August 9. What will you discover or learn?

So, targeting plasma kynurenine directly is unlikely to be effective in disease treatment, but interrogation of SH2B3 pathways during inflammation could identify novel causal cardiometabolic disease mechanisms. @MinooBagheri1@JDMosley_Moses
What a nice way to be welcomed back from maternity leave: New paper published today @SciReports https://t.co/otOU6suQRY
We examined genetic predictors of the inflammatory metabolite kynurenine, and found associations with cardiometabolic disease, but only with some predictors...
Known genetic regulators of kynurenine like IDO, TDO and SLC7A5 did NOT associate with disease, but a missense variant in SH2B3/LNK associates with both kynurenine levels and with disease...
Campus announcement 📢: Vanderbilt faculty, staff, and students can now apply for the @Vubiome Venture Fund to support microbiome scholarship spanning science, art, history, education, policy, law, etc. See thread for more info.
