Marketing 101
Never lead with your competitors.
If you’re marketing Nigeria, simply say:
“Welcome to Nigeria.”
The moment you introduce another country before the one you’re promoting, you’ve shifted your audience’s attention away from your own message.
Good marketing creates curiosity about you, not your competitors.
These "benevolent" explorers didn't just bring flags & Bibles. They brought Syphilis (depending on who you ask), smallpox, measles, influenza, chickenpox, whooping cough, mumps, diphtheria, typhus—and later, for good measure, malaria, among other diseases.
The epidemics that followed are estimated to have wiped out up to 90% of Indigenous populations in some parts of the Americas.
And even the STIs that accompanied European conquest were often not the product of consensual relationships. They came through rape, sexual violence & coercion—the so-called "spoils of war."
I always roll my eyes when these accounts push the "white saviour meets exotic native woman" fantasy. There was very little saving. What European expansion brought first, & on an unimaginable scale, was death.
Captain Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso replies to Sheikh Gumi of Nigeria, who criticized him as too young and naive to reject Sharia law, saying “Come to Burkina Faso and tell me I am a small boy. Come and force me to implement Sharia law.”
The greatest middle finger you can give modern life is becoming impossible to rush. Look around. Taste the coffee. Finish the conversation. Let impatient people overtake you. Most of them don't even know where they're sprinting.
