A few thoughts on the clip of Suldana below…

At the hour when people of colour and Muslims are being treated violently in society, I could not be silent.

Here we have an MP, Sultana, being asked by all reasonable standards an absurd question (why should it matter that we use the word Islamophobia when mosques are being attacked).

Let us assume; this question was asked in good faith; and answer using comparators to drive home how foolish and quite dangerous a discursive move, this really is.

Would it matter to speak of antisemitism if synagogues were being targeted by racist mobs; or would the global label racist suffice to describe and understand the violence? Who would oppose naming the specificity of antisemitism?

Only fools and/or antisemites.

And again, perhaps when black men are suffocated in police custody, we should invisibilise the very specific risks blackness carries when it comes to structural violence? Who would refuse to name anti-blackness? Preferring the use of the global label ‘racism’. 

Fools and/or anti-blacks.

It’s almost as though some of you are trying to re-invent all lives matter. An…anti-black reactionary/whitelash movement.

There are different kinds of racism. All related, granted. But all need specificity, context and genealogy to be resisted adequately.

Now let’s look at the embodiement of that discussion.

Most of us have felt uncomfortable, let us….be specific here to, what is happening in this short clip what got us feeling that way.

We have a Sultana.

She is the sole person of colour.

She is also the only Muslim. 

She is interrupted at least 15 times by my count in the space of 1 minute and a half. 

An incredible amount. The contempt is just objectively undeniable.

If we listen to the tone of voices, she is spoken down to, I’d say.

Voices are raised at her, in the clip I see. 
She then raises her voice slightly, understandably, in fact she does very well to keep her activation quite mild.

She is on her own.

The others on the panel are seen smirking. Then (surprise, surprise) she is the one accused of ‘attacking everyone’. Whiteness is what whiteness does.

Projection 101.

This is course a racialised charge with no grounding in the reality of the situation.

What triggered the accusation, the clear link being made by her between the toxic immigration discourse in the country, and the current violence we are witnessing, including xenophobic political slogans repeated pretty much verbatim by looters and so called ‘protestors’.

The journalist is implicated. He cannot face accountability and draws his fellow whites in. ‘You are attacking all of us’

She was not…

They join in…nonetheless, hence the sneers and raised eyebrows — this is a show of white solidarity. It is clear which ‘side’ they are on.

Suldana is most definately alone.

But she stands with reason.

Her argument is adjacent to one many anti-racist scholars or activists have made one way or the other including before…myself included, Hall, Gilroy, Akala, Andrews…but here we are she is reduced to that image.

The brown irrational woman…a role the press seems to like to fix her in. As I said, whiteness is what whiteness does.

And this happens within organisations too.

PIP is for moderate to severe disability and it is v difficult to qualify for.

It is not something one can blag. I research this.
