Our team of Operation and Management of Irrigation Schemes (OMIS) Project District Coordinators, Scheme Managers, Senior Agronomists, and Irrigation Engineers come together to reflect on the progress of Season B 2026 activities, review the progress of annual targets, share knowledge, prepare for upcoming intensive on field and in class farmer trainings, and discuss key challenges and solutions

The OMIS project is implemented in partnership with @RwandaAgri covering six districts in the @Rwandasouth and @RwandaWest, supporting 26,116 farmers (12,419 female and 13,697 male) across 3,441 hectares in irrigated marshlands .

Yesterday, YEAN convened an introductory meeting chaired by the Vice Mayor of Economic Development for @Nyamagabe District regarding the management of five irrigation schemes Under the Operational and Management of irrigation schemes Project implemented in collaboration with @RwandaAgriBoard .
YEAN presented a detailed operational plan for the project and the Vice Mayor emphasized the importance of strategic synergy to boost agricultural yields, strengthen market linkages, and maximize infrastructure through year-round (3-seasons) production. YEAN will be at the center of operationalization of irrigation schemes into Food Basket Sites.

Today, in partnership with @BPNRwanda , YEAN is facilitating a two-day technical training on Quality & Safety Standards in Agriculture for the "Grow to Scale" project.

Since 2022, YEAN leverages its AIRTEA-funded Agribusiness Incubation and Innovation Hub (AIIH) to collaborate with partners for essential technical skills in agri-food systems.

Today, at @RwandaAgriBoard Rubirizi Station (Mulindi), YEAN participated in the validation workshop organized by @RwandaAgriBoard for the Quarter Four (Q4) progress and achievements of the 2024–2025 Operation and Management of Irrigation Schemes (OMIS) project, Lot 3, covering three districts: @Kamonyi , @Muhangadis , and @RuhangoDistrict .

Through daily proximity coaching provided to farmers and Irrigation Water Users’ Organizations (IWUOs) in these schemes, YEAN recorded strong performance of the planned activities in 2024–2025. YEAN looks forward to achieving more, addressing areas that require greater effort, and contributing to increase the production, irrigation schemes valorization while strengthening the agrifood system.

Today The Eastern Province Consortium that implement YEFFA program in the @RwandaEast Province joined the Ecosystem partners for the launch of the first edition of the Youth in Agriculture Forum Series, led by the @RwandaYouthArts in partnership with @AGRA_Africa. Held in Kayonza today, This forum raises awareness on opportunities for young people in the agri-food system and strengthen supports for their entrepreneurial journeys.

Over the past 12 months, YEAN under Eastern Consortium provided interventions to 6,085 young farmers in the seven districts of the eastern province

Irrigation infrastructure are set to revolutionize agriculture productivity in Rwanda.

We work with Irrigation Water Users Organization to maintain these infrastructures in collaboration with @RwandaAgriBoard . This leads to proper use of water and increased profits from farming activities.

Yesterday, together with @RwandaAgriBoard and our partner farmers in @Kamonyi @RuhangoDistrict and @Muhangadis conducted a workshop to review and validate achievements of the last Season (Quarter 2 2025) under the project of Operation and Management of Irrigation Schemes (OMIS). YEAN through private extension, manage and maintain irrigation infrastructures and coach farmers through proximity coaching to increase the adoption of good farming practices hence increase schemes crop productivity.

As we kick off Season B 2025, the @RwandaAgriBoard team held a two days field visit to YEAN managed irrigated schemes in @RuhangoDistrict @Kamonyi and @Muhangadis . The purpose was to assess Quarter 2 activities and evaluate the progress of ongoing interventions. Through proximity coaching, farmers have improved their yields, and our collaboration with cooperatives continues to strengthen.

Earlier this week, Our Executive Secretary Mr. Arcade Nshimiyimana (@Arcadenshima ), attended the Launch of Sustainable Regional Agricultural Extension (ENSURE) Project at the East African Community Headquarters (@jumuiya ), Arusha, Tanzania. The project funded by the African Development Bank (@AfDB_Group ), is expected to increase the long-term sustainability of agriculture in the region by increasing access to robust extension services while improving the capacity of Partner States to provide responsive and reflexive agricultural extension services through three (3) key areas of intervention, namely: (i) to create an enabling an environment for regional harmonized extension and inputs policies, (ii) to deploy a regional pluralistic extension approach (public, private NGOs); and (iii) to establish a regional extension capacity-building programme targeting trans-boundary pests and diseases especially fall armyworm and desert locusts.

Why Do MANY People Fail When Investing in AGRICULTURE and LIVESTOCK Farming?

Many people invest in agriculture and livestock farming as an additional source of income, even though they are not farmers by profession. Often, we come across individuals who have lost their investments and are frustrated because their money did not yield returns or profits. Here are key factors to consider when investing in agriculture:

1. Even if you have all the necessary equipment, SEEK AN EXPERT in the type of AGRICULTURE or LIVESTOCK farming you plan to undertake. This means consulting experienced farmers rather than just anyone who has studied project management in general.

2. Farming and Livestock Rearing are sciences (read scientific materials). These activities must be done correctly. For instance, if you do not provide livestock with proper nutrition, they will not grow well or be productive. Similarly, if you fail to apply adequate fertilizers, crops will not grow properly or yield good harvests. Therefore, it is crucial to HIRE A QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL in your field of interest to assist you. Do not worry about their salary, it will come from the profits they help you secure. A simple example: You wouldn’t treat a sick person without medical training, would you?

3. Agricultural and livestock farming activities require frequent monitoring to stay updated on progress and prevent potential issues before they become irreversible.

4. Invest in products that have a MARKET DEMAND. No matter how successful your harvest or livestock production is, if the market does not need your products, your efforts will be in vain. This is why consulting experts, as mentioned in point 1, is essential.
