A recent visit back to the pretty village of Newton-in-Bowland, in Lancs where I lived some 25 years ago. The thousands of daffodils, which I joined villagers in planting for the Millennium, were finished but delighted to see a sea of tulips.

Long before Christianity reached Ireland, people marked the Winter Solstice (Grianstad an Gheimhridh) as a celebration of the sun’s return. It was a deeply meaningful time of year, especially at places like Newgrange in County Meath. There, the rising sun on the solstice shines directly into the heart of the ancient monument, lighting up its inner chamber.

Yesterday, all afternoon, as the temperature started to plummet, we could hear overhead that distinctive call as hundreds of cranes/Grus made their long journey south for the winter.
Last night's sunset as I wandered down the lane to my house. The village church bell was tolling in anticipation of Armistice day today. Just visible on the horizon the church and windmill at Tourtrès.
On a very steep hill in a nearby village, Monbahus, there once were four windmills, one can imagine carts trundling up & down filled with grain. One windmill remains, now topped by a statue of Our Lady, visible for many miles, erected 100 yrs ago, dragged uphill by teams of oxen
The lovely colours of autumn. These are the leaves of Lagerstroemia indica, such a great value and popular tree grown here in sw France for its bright summer flowers as well as the autumn colours 🍂
Happy Celtic New Year 🍂✨
For the ancient Irish & other Celtic people the day began with the going down of the sun & the New Year with the thinning of the veil and the onset of darkening days 🎃👻
As a tree of both death & rebirth the Yew 🌲 ushers in the first Lunar Month of the year 🌙
Towering in cemeteries & churchyards the Yew seems dark & imposing yet on closer inspection (the females at least) are cloaked in beautiful red berries 🪦 🍒
These berries sustain birds in the cold whilst it's thick foliage of the tree provides sanctuary against the elements 🪶❄️
The berries themselves reflect the two face of the Yew. The flesh is sweet & delightful yet the seeds will bring your heart (& life) to a stop 💔☠️
