Okay, I promised some more detailed analysis, so let's start here #SWEWNT#FIFAWWC#DENSWE#SWEITA
1) does anyone in the staff do some basic research? Literally 10 seconds before the first goal (ball still n the opposite wing) I screamed 'watch out for Oliviero'. Why? Because I saw her do the exact same move dozens of times while playing for Lazio. Did anyone do the homework or did the players deliberately ignore the instructions they got?
2) in fact both Lazio players looked like they were not scouted enough, since EO & MP were free to play their most beneficial soccer completely unchallenged for 60+ minutes. However, for the most part we failed to find a solution for Italy's most classic team moves. During Soncin's tenure #ITAWNT became a team that exploits the potential of their wing backs (after switching to the 3-back line), they heavily rely on the co-operation between full backs and forwards as well as on brief changes between playern of the same formation (both defense and front duo). Weren't we aware of this? Di Guglielmo and Cantore had so much time and space that esp in the latter stages of the first half it looked like a playground. We literally found no answer to sth that should have been completely expected.
3) okay, we had no clue what to expect from Italy, but why on Earth are we leaving our left side completely open (only 'welcome' sign was missing, but the Washington Spirit duo didn't care) and why were our players marking one another in the penalty box? Not to mention basic positioning errors - at the same time we were all over the place and completely out of place. Numbers were there (physically), but Italy (and Denmark a few days earler) could still do exactly what they wanted with very little effort.
4) team selection. Now, every head coach has the right to do it their own way, which I always respect. Therefore, I am not going to complain over f.ex. Nova Selin not being a part of the squad. However a few issues need to be brought up. Why were certain players used in a role they felt not really comfortable with? Why did it take so long to apply some much-needed tactical changes when we were getting completely outplayed and demolished? Why don't we loo for other solutions in defense when the ones we currently use keep failing every single test. Yes, Bella Andersson had a perfect NT debut, but from then things were constantly worse (the partnership with Nelhage also lacked confidence and the CB duo were responsible for quite a few mishaps during the April window).
5) why can't we benefit from what our players do for their clubs? I mean, we're ignoring Anvegård, then send her an emergency call-up only to give her four minutes of playing time, in a completely different role (yes, she's an all-around player, but be real) and with Schröder already on the bench. Also, we bring Evelyn Ijeh from North Carolina and make her sit on the bench for two games, despite her being in great scoring form. I did not see the trainings, but what I saw was a chance to re-create what coach Lind actually does (with success) for NC Courage. Ijeh on top, in a very familiar role, with Schröder (or Blackstenius or Kafaji or even Rolfö) imitating Matsukubo, Holmberg being our Ryan Williams etc. Of course, it is only one of many solutions, but at least it is a solution and for quite a long time we did not see any.
Yes, the first play-off round will be easily won even w/o any coaching staff (yes, I'm not being politically correct, but it is how it is), but we're well past the point when teams ranked somewhere between #20-#30 in the world arrived in Sthlm/Gbg only to concede a few goals and go back. We've just played a double-header vs Serbia and we all remember that especially in the away game, Serbs could've been two or three goals up if they were more clinical. Yes, both sides had their chances, but it also confirms that such a tie can easily go both ways and you can't allow to approach it not well-prepared for the task.
This said, I am not calling for the coaching staff to resign, but I am definitely calling for some change, b/c I do not want 2027 to be the first World Cup w/o #SWEWNT participating. If the current staff has a plan they firmly believe in, let them present it. If not, now is the time to act. There will be very little room for errors in December.
I will definitely keep the prom/rel structure as the only logical base, but - as mentioned above - I would welcome any possible improvements.
The league system we use in #UWCL - absolutely a loud YES from me. I was the one praising it from Day 1 and I'm glad to hear that even those who opposed it are enjoying it now.
As for expansion, I am against mainly b/c no matter where you make the cut, someone will always end up on the verge. 16 + 16 + the rest works fine with me, but I would surely change sth fith the Final Four (does not work as it should, especially with two-legged fixtures) and the play-offs between divisions.
But all in all, we are moving in the right direction when you think that 10 years ago we had an 18-month qualifying campaign that consisted of a bunch of meaningless one-way-traffic games and two matches that decided everything.
Okay, so what is the alternate solution, b/c I don't see any.
The promotion/relegation system works perfectly fine in pretty much every sport (hockey, curling, volleyball to give some examples). Even in soccer, all domestic leagues are based on the very same idea and it does not frustrate anyone that Chelsea, Man. City or Arsenal face one another a few times a year b/c they belong in the top tier.
And yes, if you look at least a little bit beyond the surface, the current system brilliantly shows the progress (or the lack of it) of specific nations on the European pyramid. But to analyze it, we need a broader picture and a bigger time frame. And if we let it exist for another 10 years (slight alterations acceptable), it would be a perfect picture of how the European ⚽️ scene has been evolving.
And yes, every SWE vs DEN or ENG vs ESP game is more beneficial in all possible aspects than going back to the absurd system we had before. Same apply to nations playing in the lower division: did you see the exciting three-way nail-biting drama featuring Lithuania, Estonia and Bosnia? These teams finally have sth realistic to play for, which is the biggest win of the prom/rel structure. And once they get promoted, they have a chance to prove themselves at the slightly higher level and either stay up and cement the strp forward or move back and try again knowing how much they need to improve in order to be competitive in a higher division.
During this #FIFAWWC qualifying campaign #SWEWNT often looked like a plane that is trying to fly without a pilot. I am not even blaming the players (at least not primarily), b/c they were not the ones responsible for getting the selection, tactics, pre-game preparation & opposition scouting wrong.
More detailed analysis to come later this week, but one thing has to be accentuated rn: if we don't answer the wake up call and keep ignoring it, we should be getting ready for a very nervy December. Just sayin', so nobody can claim they we were not warned in advance.
Tony Gustavsson's numbers as #SWEWNT head coach after 8⃣ games in charge:
1⃣ win (hard-fought 1-0 at home vs 🇷🇸)
2⃣ draws
5⃣ losses
6⃣ goals for
1⃣3⃣ goals against
Worrying sign? Too early to panic?
New questions pop up with every international window and we desperately need to find the correct answer before late November. Otherwise, we may experience sth we are definitely not ready for.
Just for the record, as of now the most possible list of #SWEWNT opponents in the decisive play-off round looks as follows: 🇷🇸🇵🇱🇺🇦🇸🇮🏴🇨🇭🇵🇹🏴
What can I say rn? #DENWNT coaching staff apparently found the secret formula that giving playing time to most in-form players may actually pay off. And - not so surprisingly - it actually did! #DENSWE#FIFAWWC
Denmark deserved nothing less than the top spot in the group with e healthy three-point lead heading into final Matchday.
Before the quals began I named Denmark as favorites, mostly b/c I watch a lot of #SerieA & #BarclaysWNT and it was impossible to ignore how solid and consistent the rising Danish stars are. Their coach had to make in work in the NT environment, and he did an amazing job, which also should not remain unnoticed.
I did my homework and watched all NC Courage games this month (just finished re-waching the one vs Angel City) #NWSL
If Evelyn Ijeh does not get the fair amount of minutes vs Denmark & Italy and/or her potential is not maximized and used to the fullest, I will be havng many questions after this international window.
Yes, soccer is not a copy-paste things, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to look at some possible options while they are lying on the table right in front of you. #Damallsvenskan #SWEWNT
Yesterday Eskilstuna vs Hammarby was my 'live' match, but after re-watching AIK vs Häcken all I can say is... WOW, what a dramatic ending! #Damallsvenskan
As a neutral, I am extremely glad with the final outcome only because the Häcken goal came under extremely controversial corcumstances (to say the least). Let's begin with the fact that the quick play that resulted in the PK decision shouldn't have happened, since AIK won a clear corner. The ref pointed towards the goal kick and that's how the whole drama began.
But OMG, what an ending! 👏👏👏

Midweek #Damallsvenskan action
#3 Eskilstuna host #1 Hammarby
Not a single shot recorded during the first 36 minutes of the game from either team. Sometimes ⚽️ stats may be deceiving, but in this particular case they tell a pretty accurate story of this first half.
#Bajen need a much improved second-half performance as long they plan to hold on to their top spot at the still very early stage of what may become a tense title race.
