The final race of the 2026A season happens tonight! Anthony DeBaro and Kyle Carpenter go head to head for 151 laps around North Wilkesboro to see who takes home the Pretend Cup!
Some thoughts…
We are sure that we are all going through the same range of emotions right now. Sadness, anger, confusion. Kyle Busch was a polarizing figure in our sport. Love him or hate him, the weight of his absence is immeasurable, and to lose him so suddenly and unexpectedly adds a whole different layer to it.
But maybe right now, in this collective darkness, is the time for a pep talk? Maybe not. Maybe this is wildly inappropriate. But hear us out.
NASCAR is a sport whose history has been both marked by tragedy and, for some reason, the beautiful moments that follow them.
For example, after Dale died in 2001, Steve Park, one of his drivers, won the very next race. Three weeks later, Harvick, in Dale’s rebranded RCR car, won at Atlanta. Then of course when we returned to Daytona in the summer, it was none other than Dale Earnhardt Jr. who would win at the track that took his father.
We can look again at the Hendrick Motorsports plane crash and how HMS rallied together, with Jimmie Johnson winning the following race with the memorial logo on his car.
Look at how many times a driver experienced personal tragedy in their own life and then won the very next race.
All we are saying is that right now everything sucks. We are all heartbroken. We are all in shock. We are all processing this together.
But as history has shown us numerous times over and over, there is a beautiful moment coming that is going to allow us to heal as a sport.
It could even be this weekend at Charlotte, where Austin Dillon has won before. It could be next weekend, next month, or next year, but there is a moment coming where we will all get to celebrate Kyle’s life and heal.
Words are shallow in times like these, but hopefully this little perspective shines some light on an otherwise gloomy situation.
Keep your heads up.
Rest in Peace KFB.
