The 2018 incident was the first where PGMOL and IFAB had to say “yes! This is how we want it officiated.”

And then a few more goals, like Mbappé’s, and they realized the interpretation just wasn’t working. And now we are here!

Like, it’s really not even a question. IFAB and PGMOL both have said 2017 interpretation was right.

@Gabe_Fischerr The League of Nations goal was correct under law. But IFAB realized the law was far too punishing on defenders and clarified with NEW considerations that effectively changed the law without changing the law.

The law had changed a few years before this incident. There was a similar 2018 goal by Harry Kane against Liverpool that IFAB used as an example for a good goal under the new law.

@Gabe_Fischerr @ck49mvp Well, no. At the time the expectation was that the defender’s touch reset the offside and the goal was correctly given.

In 2022, after multiple incidents, IFAB clarified the definition of deliberate play, lessening the punishment on defenders.

@Gabe_Fischerr @ck49mvp At the time, the guidance was to allow the goal. The clarification was adding structure that didn’t exist before. It was more or less a changing of law, but I get what you’re saying.
