While in South Indy yesterday, I saw a billboard at Stop 11 and US-31 for the “Khalistan Referendum,” listing a date of August 16, 2026 in Indianapolis.

You're seeing an issue tied to Indian politics show up in Indianapolis because central Indiana has a sizable Sikh community.

The Khalistan Referendum is an unofficial, non-binding vote organized by a diaspora advocacy group called Sikhs for Justice. It asks whether Sikhs support the idea of creating an independent country called Khalistan, separate from India. It’s not run or recognized by the U.S., Indiana, or India, and it has no legal effect. Tt's mainly a way to measure and signal political support.
