🇺🇸 The 50 star American flag flying today was designed in 1958 by 17 year old Robert G. Heft as a high school class project.
He got a B-minus on it.
The teacher claimed the design "lacked originality" and jokingly remarked that if Heft didn't like the grade, he should get the flag accepted in Washington.
Heft called his teacher's bluff. He sent his physical prototype to his congressman, Walter Moeller, who forwarded it to the design pool.
Out of more than 1,500 submissions, President Eisenhower picked his design.
His teacher later changed his grade to an A.
Thank you, Robert! The flag is beautiful! 🇺🇸
On this day in 1864, the US government turned a Confederate general's front yard into a graveyard, and the cruelty was the point. The land belonged to Robert E. Lee's family through his wife, a descendant of Martha Washington. Quartermaster General Montgomery Meigs, furious at Lee for the war, deliberately ordered Union dead buried right up against the mansion so the family could never comfortably return. It worked. They never lived there again. Today more than 400,000 American service members rest at Arlington National Cemetery, on the grounds of the home of the man who fought against them. Few acts of spite in history aged into something so sacred.

Today, we honor and remember the #Marines who took the fight to the enemy during Operation Branding Iron 14 years ago.
Over a 17-day operation in the summer of 2012, the Marines of 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment pushed deep into a heavily fortified stronghold between Now Zad and Musa Qala in the northern portion of Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
Enduring extreme conditions and intense firefights, they disrupted multiple insurgent supply networks.
Semper Fidelis.
