Man arrested for theft of motorcycle

A man has been arrested following an altercation with a police officer in downtown Halifax.

On August 5 at approximately 7 p.m., an officer was patrolling downtown Halifax on a police e-bike when he noticed a man riding a motorcycle on Upper Water Street without a helmet.

As the motorcycle stopped at a red light, the officer approached and attempted to speak with the driver. The driver became aggressive and accelerated the motorcycle toward the officer. The officer grabbed the motorcycle, causing it to tip over. The driver then attempted to flee on foot but was arrested by other officers as they arrived at the scene.

A check of the motorcycle’s licence plate revealed that the man riding it was not the registered owner. The owner was contacted and confirmed that the motorcycle had just been stolen from a parking spot on Lower Water Street.

The officer was treated by Emergency Health Services for minor injuries.

Royce Dimitre Madinsky, 39, appeared in Halifax provincial court on August 6 to face charges:
-Motor vehicle theft – auto
-Dangerous operation of a conveyance
-Assault a peace officer with a weapon
-Possession of property obtained by crime greater than $5000
-Operation of a conveyance while prohibited
-Obstruction/resisting police (x3)
-Flight from a peace officer
-Failure to stop after an accident
-Mischief
-Breach of probation

Police investigate fatal collision

Police are investigating a fatal collision that occurred this morning in Halifax.

On July 20th, at approximately 5:50 a.m., Halifax Regional Police, Emergency Health Service and Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency responded to a two-vehicle collision involving a car and a motorcycle on the Bedford Highway, near the intersection of Flamingo Drive.

The motorcyclist, a 66-year-old male, was pronounced deceased on scene by Emergency Health Services.

Traffic was blocked at the intersection of Flamingo Drive and Bedford Highway while Halifax Regional Police Collision Reconstruction Unit processed the scene. The road has reopened.

The investigation is ongoing.

Thoughts are with the loved ones of the deceased and everyone who was affected by this incident.
