🚨 Jamie Carragher weighs in on Folarin Balogun’s controversial red card in USA vs Bosnia and Herzegovina, comparing it to Messi’s challenge against Algeria:
🗣️ “This is exactly the kind of decision that makes you question what VAR is actually for. Balogun gets sent off in a World Cup knockout game for what looks like an accidental coming-together, yet Messi does something very similar against Algeria and it’s waved away like it never happened.”
“Football fans have eyes. We all saw the Messi challenge — studs up, contact on the back of the leg — and nothing. Then Balogun gets the full VAR treatment and a straight red. How is that consistent? It’s not.”
“What annoys me most is the lack of any clear standard. If that’s a red for Balogun, then it has to be a red for Messi too. You can’t have one rule for the biggest names in the game and another for everyone else. That’s not refereeing, that’s favouritism.”
“The USA are in a World Cup knockout match, they lose their main striker to a decision like this, and people are left scratching their heads wondering why the same level of scrutiny wasn’t applied to Messi. It’s frustrating for the neutral, never mind the American fans.”
“VAR was brought in to clean the game up and make things fairer. Right now it’s doing the opposite — it’s creating more arguments, more confusion, and more suspicion that certain players are getting special treatment.”
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the laws have to be applied the same way to every single player on the pitch. If you’re going to be ultra-strict with Balogun in a massive game, then you better be ultra-strict with Messi as well. Otherwise the whole thing loses all credibility.”
“Big stars have always had an easier ride in some ways, but with VAR in the game now there’s no excuse for this level of inconsistency. Nights like this just make supporters lose faith in the whole system.”
“If football wants people to respect the decisions, then every challenge has to be judged by the same standard — whether it’s Folarin Balogun, Lionel Messi or any other player. Anything less and VAR is doing more harm than good.”
Folarin Balogun drew the red card for one simple reason: @FIFAWorldCup is corrupt.
