In 2020 I turned a dining room into a beat lab. Made over a hundred tracks in a few months. Almost none of them are mixed. They sit on a drive like a museum nobody visits. Making felt like the whole job. Finishing was the part I skipped. An archive full of almosts weighs more than one shipped thing.

Close the loop.
Send the file. Burn the draft. Say the thing. Let it go.
It doesn’t have to be perfect. It has to leave.
That’s the relief.

This is the part people sanitize when they call it inspiration. A signal gets in and mutates through memory, taste, ego, and accident before it comes back out. The amount it mutates is the whole game. That's literally what a voice is: how much the copy breaks before it leaves your hands. "Creep" barely mutated. Early Radiohead maybe hadn't found their distortion yet, so the signal came through almost clean. The irony is they later became one of the highest-mutation bands alive, then came after Lana for doing the low-mutation thing they did first. The melody's just looking for its next host. Some hosts change it more than others.
