Richard McDeid has taken his son, who has cerebral palsy, to over 1,200 heavy metal concerts because it calms him.

Mason McDeid has severe cerebral palsy and, as a baby, cried almost constantly.

One day his father put on a Metallica VHS tape while doing dishes and noticed Mason had gone quiet, the first time he'd fallen asleep without being held.

From there, heavy metal became their language, Richard and Mason McDeid have attended an estimated 1,200+ concerts together, with fans and security guards often clearing paths and lifting Mason's wheelchair to the front row.

When Mason was hospitalized with a dangerously high fever in 2017, Richard launched "Mason MetalFest," an annual benefit show that's now become a fixture of Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month.
