Researching and publishing Pittsburgh's violent and chaotic history against sex workers in honor of my grandmother Shirley Cavanaugh.

Vance, all rehearsed motions. Arms are stiff. No conviction. Watch Vance’s arms. They follow stories. They follow directions. They tell the story he is speaking. Just watch. #nonverbalcommunication#VPDebate2024
JD Vance #bodylanguage is absolutely learned. All his batons (arm movements) are rhythmic to his speech Trump hands and arms. Forehead dead with Botox. @navarrotells been awhile, what fun. #VPDebate2024
@MartyGriffinKD Pittsburgh is only as liveable as our least fortunate neighbor. Mr Rogers would be appalled we’ve let this get so bad. @gainey_ed - any kid of solution being cooked up at all to help these people?
In the absence of comprehensive and accessible sex education, sex workers become de facto sex educators. It’s a job that most of us did not sign up for, but that we are handed nonetheless...

@SheDidWhatPGH My records get really spotty before 1850. But it gets really spotty back then. Commonwealth of PA was founded in 1787. Source tells me, crimes at this point were “common law” crimes and met with penalties by justices of the peace and local courts. Will dig.
@SheDidWhatPGH When I acquired the records from the Allegheny Workhouse (1867 - 1970s) I hired grad students from Pitt to go through them. We found 200+ names who had been charged with bawdy house or prostitution. This is not included newspaper archives which returned 300+ more. Happy to share.
@SheDidWhatPGH I'd love to know who this woman is. Maud Chester died in 1893. I've been unable to uncover any photographs of her. I have reached out to three relatives so far.
@SheDidWhatPGH I've learned that Second Ave (modern day Blvd) had the highest concentration of bawdy houses in downtown Pgh. I've emailed you a few maps.
@TangledRoots1 I sent you this link via IG. I don't use Twitter much anymore. But I think it's more effective to tag you here. I love your story. If my mother were alive still, she would be sharing my tears with me. Thank you for what you wrote. This is how culture changes. ☂️❤️🔥

This article by Katy Massey has parallels to my mother and grandmother's story that has my heart bursting.
The culture will only change when we lift our stigmas, elevate these women and see them intersectionality.
Our empathetic reflection changes their legacy.

Not only did @guardian publish my article about my mum today - it is 3rd most read AND the second most ‘deeply read’ ie time readers have spent with it! All writers want is to resonate with readers. Gobsmacked!
