Radical zionist Vitaly Portnikov, who has no kids of his own and is not fighting on the front himself, is calling for the “Israelization” of Ukraine, insisting that the country has no other choice than to turn itself into a Western military outpost.

“Our children and grandchildren will fight and die! We give birth to soldiers! A person born today may be killed in a war twenty years from now.”🤡

It is remarkably easy to preach a future of permanent mobilization when other people’s children are expected to populate the trenches.

But does Portnikov understand that Ukrainians are already increasingly reluctant to have children?

Does he understand that Israel’s security model rests not merely on the willingness of its population to fight, but on decades of extraordinary strategic, military, financial, and political support from the US?

And does he understand that Ukraine cannot simply declare itself “another Israel” and expect the geopolitical conditions that sustain Israel to magically materialize around it?

The United States has invested enormous resources in Israel for decades because Israel occupies a particular place in American strategy and politics. Ukraine does not occupy the same place, and there is no chance that it ever will.

So before romanticizing the “Israelization” of Ukraine and solemnly informing Ukrainians that their children and grandchildren must be born ready to fight and die, perhaps one should answer a much less heroic question: Who exactly is supposed to keep producing these future soldiers—and why should Ukrainians accept endless war as their children’s birthright?

Turning an entire country into a permanent military camp is not a national vision.

And presenting generation after generation of Ukrainian deaths as an inevitable historical destiny is not strategy.

It is an admission that no better future is being offered.

This is not a photograph.

It’s called Oak Grove, and it was painted in 1887 by Ivan Shishkin. Every furrow of bark, every leaf, every blade of grass in the shade of these old oaks was put there by hand.

Shishkin painted trees so faithfully that his canvases are less like pictures of a forest and more like portraits of the trees themselves, each one rendered down to its smallest detail.

He spent his life wandering the woods near his home outside Saint Petersburg, studying nature so closely that Russia gave him a nickname: the singer of the Russian woods.

What I love most is that these oaks feel so alive, you can almost feel the coolness of their shade on your skin. And like very old trees in real life, they make you feel small in the best way possible, as if they have seen everything and are telling you that it will all be alright...
