I think people are making a lot of assumptions about the Clippers' intentions with the No. 5 pick.

Every time the Clippers get any kind of asset, the immediate reaction is to connect it to Sam Presti because of the Paul George trade. But if you actually look at OKC's roster construction, that isn't as obvious as people make it seem.

Outside of the top-tier prospects like Cameron Boozer and AJ Dybantsa, a lot of the players currently projected around that No. 5 range are guards. Names like Keaton Wagler, Darius Acuff Jr., and Kingston Flemings keep coming up.

OKC already has one of the deepest backcourts in the league, so why would they spend additional assets to move up for another guard?

More importantly, people keep ignoring what Lawrence Frank said after the lottery. He specifically talked about the draft as a pathway to improve the team this summer.

The Clippers didn't even know if the Indiana pick was going to convey until the lottery happened. Now they suddenly find themselves holding a top-five pick in a draft where they have a chance to add a legitimate blue-chip talent on a rookie-scale contract.

Why would their first instinct be to break that asset up into future protected picks?
If the goal is to stay competitive while also getting younger, the No. 5 pick is probably the cleanest way to do both. You get a high-upside prospect and cost-controlled talent without sacrificing your current roster.

That's why I'm skeptical of all the trade-down rumors. Other teams may view this pick as an asset to flip around. The Clippers may view it as a rare opportunity to add a cornerstone-level young player they otherwise would never have access to.

And if we've learned anything about the Ballmer era, it's that the Clippers rarely operate the way the rest of the league expects them to.
