Some startups in Barcelona are going for a the “return to the office” (RTO).

Companies that will require at least some days week in the office:

* TravelPerk
* FactorialHR

@oscarpierremi talked about this with @jordiromero and @bernatfarrero in the latest Itnig podcast.

I've come to the conclusion most of it is irrational and
just copy and paste what others did in the U.S. We tend to think that markets are rational and analyze everything in detail. The truth is: no one wants to lose a bandwagon. This happened with remote in 2020, where clearly companies nor employees where prepared for working from home in a 60 square meters flat. It happened again with crypto, AI and now RTO policies.

Most of the examples are straw-men. Yes you can turn around to a colleague if she’s in the office. Or maybe the colleague is in a meeting and you need to send a Slack message anyway. Or maybe your colleague is not there because that they their kid got sick and they need to be at home nevertheless. Or they went home sooner because they needed to commute and grabbing their kids from kindergarten.

The reality is that some managers don’t know how to manage a team outside of the office. And these measures are patches to fix that instead of working with good, outcome-based, empowered managers and teams.

Maybe you’ll have a magical moment where you share a coffee with someone and solve a high-prio problem. I’d say that as companies scale, there are less of these. But human beings have nostalgia about the moments where the startup was still a 50-people shop where decisions were taken in 1h in a whiteboard. The thing is that being back to the office won’t make your company small again.

I think that Oscar, Bernat and Jordi are 100% entitled to do, as CEOs, what they think it’s best for the company. Even if it upsets people for a while.

Being cynical, I can imagine these folks in a board meeting answering again and again why they didn’t mandate RTO yet. And doing so just so they can focus on the core business again. Again, there’s not much rationality in the markets and boards are no different.

DeliveryHero, Glovo’s parent company, lost 2/3 of their market cap in 2022. TravelPerk also struggled to make their business work. I don’t have Factorial numbers, but I’d guess by their latest movements that they’re not shipping their product as fast as they wished. And I’d bet that selling it is also challenging these days.

One last thing: I find funny that most of these mandates often end up in Director+ level, where being co-located seems to not be as important as a product team. While I have some sympathy for the different dynamics across teams, it sends a message the rules are different depending on where you are in the hierarchy.

At the end it’s all about offer and demand. As companies see there is less demand and less competition for talent, they know these RTO mandates and other actions will have less impact in their attrition. In some cases, they welcome it.
