@realrockriley I haven’t seen anything quite like it before, or since. The outpouring of grief, particularly around Dale’s merchandise haulers in the infield and at his trackside garage, was intense.
Hard to believe it’s 25 years ago today that NASCAR lost its living legend on the final lap of its Super Bowl. This snapshot was taken two days earlier at Daytona when rivals Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon agreed to a rare joint interview. A poignant memory from my time at CNN/SI
@aerolocksmiths So true. My recollection is they discovered his seatbelt had severed at impact, and he was thrust into the steering wheel while hitting the wall at 150 mph. A skull fracture was the cause of death. A massive tragedy that prompted equally massive safety changes.
@PLeonardNYDN So wonderfully crafted, Pat. A true testament to quality writing…and a treasured friendship. I’m fortunate to have shared the ride with Larry for nearly four decades.
Larry was a journalistic tour de force. The absolute best at what he did. Over many years we banged elbows in locker rooms, shared kudos for a story or interview, or recently just wished each other well. I always admired how much he bragged on his son & grandson. RIP to a legend.
@Nivral15 Dave is slated to do 50-55 games this season, and these last few games with Brian were part of that plan. Dave returns Saturday in Columbus!!
