Hard to believe it’s 25 years ago today that NASCAR lost its living legend on the final lap of its Super Bowl. This snapshot was taken two days earlier at Daytona when rivals Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon agreed to a rare joint interview. A poignant memory from my time at CNN/SI

@aerolocksmiths So true. My recollection is they discovered his seatbelt had severed at impact, and he was thrust into the steering wheel while hitting the wall at 150 mph. A skull fracture was the cause of death. A massive tragedy that prompted equally massive safety changes.

Larry was a journalistic tour de force. The absolute best at what he did. Over many years we banged elbows in locker rooms, shared kudos for a story or interview, or recently just wished each other well. I always admired how much he bragged on his son & grandson. RIP to a legend.
