A 14-year-old girl was a victim of crime. She went to the police. She was assigned to a detective in the safeguarding team.

That detective, John Hamilton, sent her inappropriate messages.

He worked in child and adult protection. His entire job was safeguarding vulnerable children. She came to him because she needed protection.

He was suspended in October 2021. Arrested. Denied everything. Put the victim through a full trial. Found guilty February 2026.

The IOPC said his actions were made worse by the fact he was in a safeguarding role working with an extremely vulnerable child.

She reported it. It was taken seriously. It still took years to reach a conviction.

She went to the police because she needed help. The person supposed to help her was the danger. Where do you go after that? #police #predator #awareness #grooming #fail
