President Donald Trump said he wants the federal investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to continue, dismissing concerns that it threatens the central bank’s independence. Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump said prosecutors should “take it to the end and see,” signaling no intention to intervene.

Trump again accused Powell of mismanaging funds tied to renovations at the Federal Reserve’s headquarters, a project he has repeatedly criticized as overly expensive. The probe has reportedly involved grand jury subpoenas and carries the possibility of criminal charges, escalating a long-running conflict between the White House and the Fed.

Powell has warned the investigation is designed to pressure the Fed into cutting interest rates. In a January video statement, he said the threat of criminal charges was a consequence of the Fed setting policy based on its economic assessment rather than presidential preferences.

The situation has drawn international attention. Central bank leaders from countries including Sweden, Switzerland, Australia and Canada issued a public letter backing Powell, calling him a respected colleague and expressing concern over political interference.

Trump has continued to attack Powell publicly, urging immediate rate cuts and arguing that high borrowing costs harm the economy and national security. Powell has held rates steady at 3.5 to 3.75 percent and reiterated that decisions will remain data driven.

Economists have warned the probe is unprecedented and could undermine confidence in the Fed’s independence, even as markets remain cautious while the investigation unfolds.
