The HDA should set common risk standards and bring conservation, resilience & regenerative growth together.

I also propose a Himalayan Catalyst to reward those protecting these ecosystems.

The Himalayas are not just an ecological treasure.

They are critical infrastructure for India.

Yet no institution is accountable for the resilience of this system as a whole.

We need an empowered Himalayan Development Authority with the resources and expertise to act.

Solar, e-buses & electric 2/3-wheelers can already generate returns.

Hard-to-abate sectors need blended finance at scale.

A Green Finance Institution can de-risk capital & crowd in investment.

Going green can make India more competitive.

In my conversation with @capitalcalculus on @stratnews_tech, I explain why sustainability and competitiveness must go hand in hand, & why India’s climate transition should be treated as an investment, not a cost for growth.

Finally: mobilise finance at scale through a Green Finance Institution using blended finance, guarantees and catalytic capital; & strengthen enterprise action through BRSR and transition roadmaps.

India’s sustainability transition must drive growth & competitiveness.

Yesterday, we launched the @FollowCII India Sustainability Task Force 2026 report after 18 months of intensive work.

As Chairman, I had the privilege of working with leaders across industry, finance, regulation, public policy & academia to build a clear roadmap for India.

Our first three findings: make sustainability a whole-of-government and whole-of-society mission; define sustainable and transition activity through a credible Climate Finance Taxonomy; & build credible carbon and resource markets that create the right economic signals.

#WATCH | Delhi | CII India Sustainability Taskforce Chairman and former Union Minister Jayant Sinha says, “…Sustainability is like a slow-motion COVID. It is affecting all of us. Whether it is the flooding in Gurgaon, the flooding in the Brahmaputra River Valley or these terrible tragedies that we are seeing right now in Nepal because of the glacial lake outburst. All of this is fundamentally linked to the fact that the planet is warming very rapidly and this naturally creates all these extreme weather problems… In our task force, we have identified five very important things that are required from a whole of government and society perspective… Number one, we need to be able to have a green taxonomy, which will enable us to figure out where the investments have to go. Number two, we have to have carbon markets that enable a carbon price and that can accelerate further investments. Number three, we need a green financing institution that is able to provide investment support for making these green investments. Then number five, what we need is a new reporting standard, VRSR 2.0, that can be rolled out across not just large companies, but MSMEs as well, so that ultimately everybody is reporting on sustainability… Everybody has to work together on this to enable this to happen.”

Delhi: CII ISTF Chairman and former Union Minister Jayant Sinha says, "First, my condolences and sympathies to everybody that has been affected by this terrible, terrible tragedy in Nepal. The sad truth is that these Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) are becoming more and more common in the Himalayas. Of course, Nepal is dealing with it right now, but unfortunately we've had these in India also, like what we saw in Kedarnath some years ago. So as it gets warmer, our glaciers in the Himalayas are beginning to melt. As they melt, water is forming in those glaciers instead of ice..."
