Veteran Gambian Journalist Pap Saine Honored with Prestigious 'Journalist on the Podium' Award at AFCON in Morocco
In a heartfelt recognition of lifelong dedication to African football coverage, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), in collaboration with AIPS Africa, has awarded veteran Gambian sports journalist and media leader Pap Saine the esteemed "Journalist on the Podium" honor during the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Morocco.
The ceremony, held amid the excitement of the tournament's climax, celebrated journalists who have covered more than 10 editions of the Africa Cup of Nations. Saine, a pioneering figure in Gambian sports journalism was recognized for his remarkable record of attending 16 AFCON tournaments and three FIFA World Cups, showcasing unparalleled commitment spanning decades.
As co-publisher of The Point Newspaper and former media officer for CAF, Saine has been a trailblazer, elevating sports reporting in The Gambia and contributing significantly to continental football narratives. His nomination by the Sports Journalists’ Association of The Gambia (SJAG) highlighted his role as honorary life president and his groundbreaking impact on the profession.
In a proud moment, Saine received the award from FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who joined CAF officials in presenting the accolade. The presentation underscored the global respect for journalists who chronicle Africa's premier football showcase.
SJAG President Omar Jarju praised Saine as a deserving recipient, noting his "unwavering commitment" and pioneering spirit. The award not only honors individual excellence but also celebrates the vital role of media in promoting African football's growth and unity.
Saine's journey began notably in 1988, when he earned early recognition from the Moroccan Football Federation during AFCON. Today, this latest tribute cements his legacy as one of the continent's most respected sports voices.
Choose skills and independence early.
Love is beautiful, friendship is beautiful, but always have something that is yours. Your education, your hustle, your talent. It builds confidence no one can take from you 🤍
Dear ladies never forget that: The same world that shames me for being a single mother also shames you for not being a mother and shames another woman for having too many children..lt shames one woman for having a child at the age of 19 because she's too young but also shames another for having at 36 because she's too old..lt shames a woman who marries young as well as the one who marries old..It shames women who don't have beautiful bodies and shames those who go under the knife to get the bodies. This world shames all women, not a single one of us is spared, not a single one. So love and make yourselves happy.
