If we really care about fairness, we should fight for laws/policies that are rooted in science, inclusion, and dignity rather than fear. Because trans people are more than headlines and debating points, we’re messing with real people's lives.
These laws hit hardest for trans kids from low-income communities. They already struggle to access healthcare. Now we’re stripping them of their last safe space, too?
It’s about the team environment, the discipline, the feeling of belonging. Take that away, and you isolate someone who needs that connection, which will affect their mental health. I'm just not sure how thats “protecting” someone.
I think Schuyler Bailar, a trans athlete and activist, put it best: “I am not a threat. I just want to play the sport I love.” Of course, competition is a big part of sports, but there is more that goes into being a part of a team and sport than just that.
However, the truth is that these bans are more about fear than about fairness. Fear of what you ask? Fear of gender nonconformity. Fear of change to the established system. And this fear has been disguised as a concern for women’s sports.
That’s why organizations like the NCAA require hormone therapy and other medical benchmarks for trans athletes. These are not shortcuts; they’re standards grounded in science and ethics.
Let’s be real, sports were never perfectly fair to begin with. Some athletes are taller, stronger, and faster. And that’s okay. What matters is leveling the playing field where we can.
