Did you know that tamanduas are known as ‘stinkers of the forest’ by local people due to the scent trails they leave to mark their territory.

In celebration of Primate Weekend, our Animal Care Team share some updates about two of our rainforest species: the pygmy marmosets and coppery titi monkeys!

As we come to the end of the Olympics 2024, we would like to welcome our High Jump contestant just in time for the final tonight – the pygmy marmoset!

Pygmy marmosets have been recorded leaping 1.4m vertically, which is 100 times their own height!

We are saddened to announce that our male White Rhino, Otto, passed away on 22nd March 2024.

On 3rd October, we welcomed the arrival of two male Goeldi’s Monkeys after not housing the species for 8 years. Pedro and Pascal have settled in well and can be seen at their new home at Worlds Apart.

@peacefulplace @medieval_rat So males and females have beards, we have lots of girl goats with beards. His name is Geoff 😅 the large stomach is due to a few reasons: gas build up to help ferment food, Pygmy’s store their fat on the side due to their short legs and being constantly fed by public! 😊

It’s World Hyena Day! Here at Colchester Zoo we have three Spotted Hyenas, Abu, Jasiri and Kivuli. Did you know, unlike most animals, Hyenas can digest carrion such as bones and skin due to special stomach acids which break down these body parts.
