E-mu SP-1200の音が「太い」と語られる理由について、海外の資料やマニュアルを調べていくと、単に12bit＝ロービットだから、というだけではないことがわかります。あの独特の質感は、複数の要素が重なり合った結果として生まれていると考えられます

よく知られているのが、ピッチシフトによるエイリアシングです。SP-1200の総サンプリング時間はわずか約10秒。その限られたメモリを少しでも有効に使うため、当時のプロデューサーたちはレコードを45回転などで再生してサンプリングし、その後SP-1200側でピッチを下げて元のテンポや���程に戻していました。この過程で生まれる独特のザラつきが、SP-1200らしい艶を作ると言われています

もうひとつ重要なのが、出力チャンネルごとのフィルター構造です。これは公式マニュアルにも記載されている特徴ですが、SP-1200はチャンネル（Output）ごとにフィルターのかかり方が異なります。特にチャンネル1と2にはダイナミック・フィルターが用意されており、時間とともに帯域が変化する仕組みになっています

たとえばキックをチャンネル1または2に配置すると、ダイナミック・フィルターによって高域の余計な成分が丸まり、低域から中低域の芯が相対的に前に出てきます。チャンネル3〜6では一定量のフィルターがかかり、7・8ではフィルターを通らないため、音によってはザラつきや明るさをあえて残すこともできます。このフィルターには、SSM2044というアナログ・フィルター用チップが使われており、その回路特有の丸みや粘りも音に加わる。要するにSP-1200は、ただドラムを太くするだけでなく、チャンネルごとのフィルターの差によって、丸さ、粗さ、抜けを振り分けられる。その結果として、SP-1200ならではの独自のサウンドが生まれると考えられているんですね
