I believe you mentioned your gpu is a 3090. The 90s tend to run pretty hot, and the thermal grease is certainly getting tired, especially if you've been rendering videos with WAN/H3/etc.
Replacing thermal paste is not too hard, but assume that you might tear some thermal pads in the process. Some ppl only replace the paste. If you're going to tear down your card, it usually is best to replace all the thermals.
I had to go water cooled. I didn't want to risk losing a very good chip, so returning it to have the faulty heat pipe replaced was not an option. I had to go water cooled. Now that I have, I'll never go back to air cooled.
Re-greasing the GPU takes a bit of skill, but after doing it for as long as I have (since the late 1980s with cpus) I've learned a few tricks.
It's important to read-up on what it takes for your specific card. I used JayTwoCents videos on YouTube (particularly for water cooling).
Most people buy thermal pads in varying thickness depending on the card; I stopped using those years ago. Using a thermal putty instead is beginner friendly, and longer lasting if you buy smart.
With later NVidia GPUs they can be finicky with thermal pad clearances, and some boards warp a bit over time due to heat. The best solution (the one that was most effective with my 4090) was NOT to use thermal pads, but to use thermal putty. If you happen to apply too much, it will spread and give. After using various brands, my goto is Thermal Grizzly Putty Pro. That stuff is amazing imho.
As for the CPU paste, there is only one that handles the extreme heat well: TPM 7950. I've used 20+ brands over the years. TPM is simply top-notch for our GPUs. I had a hard time getting the real stuff; got duped with fakes twice. https://t.co/99O3fbs9PT is the real deal.
I don't know every brand available, but these two are the best I am aware of. Most greases and thermal pads perform good in the beginning, but wear out over time. Those two I mentioned will keep for many years.
If you're going to open your card, I'm sure you don't want to have to do it very often. That's why I shared my personal choices. I'm not affiliated in any way with the above mentioned; just my experience with the products.
@darklig45208568@deadsun_0 I had that problem with my 4090. After weeks of re-greasing and troubleshooting, turns out the vapor chamber had slowly leaked out. I had no choice but to go with water cooling. Now I never see more than 70c Hotspot in a 84F ambient room.
GamersNexus covered this in a video a while back. A company in China will take your existing 4090 (they don’t stock the GPUs, so they use yours) and resolder the GPU and VRAM onto a custom PCB. You’re charged for the labor, the PCB, and the extra 24GB of RAM.
Multiple companies can do the same thing—they just need the custom PCB and the additional VRAM.
I heard Mike Rowe mention @PureTalk a few times on his podcasts. I thought what he's said seemed a bit much, so I had a look over on https://t.co/DB62FQkD33.
Everything he stated was true. So my Wife and I dropped AT&T and T-Mobile and moved to Pure Talk.
Same quick network, just far cheaper.
Website is efficient, and the staff helpful. Why waste money?!?.
I have no affiliation with Pure Talk at all. I never endorse or approve anything. Ever. Until today.
0 to 60 MPH in 0.8 second. It's a prototype and heavier than the production version, so it can go much quicker. The issue becomes not crushing the passengers, not a limitation of the car.
My experience with electronics and computers is not unlike your own:
VIC-20, Atari 400, TRS-80, C64, Amiga 2000, Amiga 500(2x), Amiga 3000: 1 stock, 1 Cyberstorm 68060+PPC 604e / Cybervision 64 expanded.
I decided to purchased TMOG after trying beta 2 and 3. Excellent and extremely useful!
It's a great time saver.
Everyone I've recommended TMOG to has thanked me for telling them about it.
:)
I recall wondering why some of the very tools you implemented in TMOG hadn't been added over time. It has simplified my troubleshooting routine and saves me from jumping to four other apps. TMOG is top-notch and I can use with whatever OS I happen to be running. Excellent work, Dave!
This kid’s talent level is INSANE.
Holy shit.
He’s playing both parts of one of the most challenging guitar parts of all time - Dire Straits’ “Sultans of Swing” - and making it look effortless 👀
Pretty cool, man.
@Local_Chiller15@BellaBaddie__ There a crazy old sprite/7-up recipe that uses pine needles, water and cane sugar or honey. Look it up. It takes a few days to prepare, but has a nice taste. My great grandmother made it when I was a kid.
@HistorianUSA1 Take any light thread, kite string, tie a weight to it and toss it anywhere above and over the branch. If it's a web, you'll know. Simple.
