One of the most accepted theories is the Right Eye Theory, which suggests that the real Nikki is trapped in her right eye, while Wish Nikki keeps that eye hidden either by leaving it in darkness or by turning that side of her face away from Bear.
The theory has also been used to explain the reverse-walking scene, the dark bedroom shot (“It’s Not Mutual”), and several moments where her right eye appears to disappear.
After rewatching the movie, though, I think some of those effects can be explained by the CAMRIP quality, which makes parts of her face look like they’re fading even when they aren’t.
That said, I don’t think the theory is completely wrong. The boys’ night scene, where the real Nikki tries to smash the bottle into her right eye, feels like a deliberate visual clue. That focus on the right side seems far too specific to ignore.
My best guess is that the filmmakers used Nikki’s right eye as a symbolic anchor, the place where the boundary between the real Nikki and Wish Nikki is at its weakest and most unstable.
