I agree with @sndurlauf.
Over the years at Penn, I have observed developments that deeply concern me.
There is, of course, outstanding scholarship being produced across the humanities. Indeed, few economists are likely to hold the humanities in higher regard than I do, both for their intellectual value and for their essential role in a university.
At the same time, it is difficult to avoid the conclusion that some work has become increasingly oriented toward political advocacy rather than scholarly inquiry. When that happens, the distinction between academic research and activism becomes blurred in ways that are not healthy for either the humanities or the university more broadly.
If another person complains about "exorbitant" UK VC salaries, I will explode. The median base salary for Russel Group VCs is ~£350k. Meanwhile, their median staff headcount is ~7–9k, their median number of students is ~30k and their median annual revenue is almost £1 BILLION.
Fascinating piece by @megbaynes on how risk-averse British pension schemes are.
The £73bn universities pension scheme has been delivering an insanely pedestrian *1.7%* return for its members over the past 5 years

Logarithms pose uniquely thorny issues when using difference-in-differences. When the baseline difference between your control group and experiment group is large enough, using a logged dependent variable can actually change the *sign* of the estimated effect!
“The calculator requires no internet connection to set up. It won't ask for bluetooth permissions. It doesn't want to know your precise location. You won't be prompted to create an account & you don't need to log in. … You paid for it & now it is yours. It has no other master.“

@dlknowles@toby_n @CarterPaddy Thanks @dlknowles@toby_n @CarterPaddy for the interest — the numbers are different as we focus on prime aged men to minimise concerns about endogenous responses to different welfare systems, etc. This means the numbers are a bit different but the basic point remains unchanged.
