The 5th district federal appeals court has ruled that ERs are not required to perform life-saving abortions if it would run afoul of Texas state law.

Texas is simultaneously arguing that a fetus has rights greater than the mother, and that a Texas Prison guard who lost her child to still birth death when her supervisor denied her a break cannot be compensated because a fetus has no rights.

This horrific ruling will kill women and children. This isn’t an opinion—it’s a documented fact as states with the most stringent anti-abortion laws have the highest rates of maternal and infant mortality.

It was never about life. It was always about control of women. This is yet another reason we need gauranteed universal healthcare outside the control of state law. Healthcare is a human right that must follow science and standard of care—not the whims of extremist and misogynistic politicians.
