Marc Andreessen, who has watched him up close, puts it plainly: if you hit a problem you can’t solve, “Elon Musk is going to show up in his Gulfstream jet, and he’s going to sit with me overnight in front of the keyboard or in front of the manufacturing line, and he’s going to help me figure this out.” No report, no committee – he goes to the bug itself.

Most people, given the choice, would rather not know. Too much information feels like a threat: it complicates the story, exposes the flaw, forces a decision you hoped to avoid. So leaders retreat into the corner office and let the world arrive pre-digested – a tidy dashboard, a filtered summary, a slide softened through five layers of people. The ivory tower is not a perk; it is an information filter, and it screens out precisely the bad news you most need to hear.

Musk’s instinct runs the other way. He goes to where the truth lives – the factory floor, the launchpad, the customer.

It is also why he lives on 𝕏: a raw, unfiltered feed of what people actually think is the closest thing to walking the floor of the entire world, and he keeps telling other leaders to get on it and hear it directly. Comfort is not the goal; contact with reality is.

Truth is not something you can be briefed on from a safe distance. It is found by going to it – before it comes, uninvited, to find you.
