One thing I'd like to help people understand is difference between anxiety & FEAR
Fear is response to danger
Anxiety is response to internal (psychological) issues that are not understood—but can be understood in therapy
"Anxiety" screening often mis-diagnoses fear as anxiety
9/ good therapy has psychological benefits that go far beyond mere symptom improvement. So it is still possible ACT is superior to "2nd wave"CBT, just as psychodynamic therapies may be superior. The problem may be poor/inadequate research methods.
BUT...
1/ The fundamental error of cognitive therapy is assumption that emotion is mediated by beliefs & merely revising beliefs will change emotional experience.
Except research in experimental psychology shows affect precedes cognition (feelings happen first, beliefs follow), and
This can't be said enough or loud enough.
"Self-love" does not come about in isolation. It comes about in relationship. The real work is done in relationship.
The fundamental insight of psychoanalysis is the mind is divided against itself. We work at cross-purposes with ourselves, knowingly and unknowingly.
Psychotherapy is not advice giving. It exists because because people cannot follow such advice.
