Today marks the 24th anniversary of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On October 7, 2001, U.S. and British forces launched the first strikes in response to the September 11th attacks, targeting Taliban and Al-Qaeda strongholds in Afghanistan. The mission later expanded to include counterterrorism operations in the Philippines, the Horn of Africa, the Trans-Sahara region, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, the Caribbean, and Central America.

Throughout Operation Enduring Freedom, many Green Berets made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. We honor their courage, service, and enduring legacy today and every day.

Today, we remember Master Sgt. Kevin N. Morehead and Sgt. 1st Class William M. Bennett who were killed in action on this day in 2003. We also remember Sgt. 1st Class Duane A. Thornsbury who was killed in action on this day in 2009. MSG Morehead and SFC Bennett were assigned to 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group - Airborne. SFC Thornsbury was assigned to Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group - Airborne.
